Celebration of World Right to Know Day

ABA/CEELI, USAID, OSCE Mission to Serbia, Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia (NUNS) and Coalition of NGOs for free access to information awarded the Serbian Ministry for Science and Environment for accomplished significant achievement establishing best practices in implementation of the Law on Free Access to Information of Public Importance. Commissioner for Information of Public Importance, Rodoljub Sabic handed over the award to Aleksandar Popovic, Minister for Science and Environment in Media Center, on September 28, 2006. While speaking at the opening of the celebration of the World Right to Know Day, Head of the OSCE Mission to Serbia Ambassador Hans Ola Urstad highlighted that the implementation of the Law on Free Access to Information is of key importance. “The free access to information is an integral part of a good government which should value the ability of the citizens to practice their legitimate curiosity about the work of state and other public institutions,” stated Urstad. US Ambassador to Serbia, Michael Polt said that only 310 institutions provided information in accordance to the Law.
