The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, based on contacts with a larger number of media representatives, has confirmed that very soon, most probably already next week, Google INC. shall start video recording of streets and facilities in Belgrade and in other places in the Republic of Serbia in order to implement Google Street View program.
Reminding that the exact time of start of recording is an issue of business policy of Google, which would inform the public about it, and that the Commissioner found interesting aspects pertaining to privacy protection, i.e. personal data processing, in relation to which Google has set specific conditions, the Commissioner Rodoljub Sabic stated the following:
„Within the communication, for which one can say lasted shortly for such occasions, but which still had to last for a couple of months, attention of the Google has been directed towards the necessity to respect the standard for protection of privacy, i.e. personal data processing.
In relation to that, I have set quite specific conditions for Google, pertaining primarily to the obligation to inform in advance about the recording in a certain area, regarding elimination of possibility to process data from wireless Internet connections and anonymization of personal data in records that would be made available to the public.
Google has also formally confirmed that it accepts those conditions and that it shall respect them. Accordingly, I expect that Google Street View program shall be implemented in a good way and to the satisfaction of the citizens of Serbia, without questioning their guaranteed right to personal data protection.
It is understood, independently from such good expectations, that the Commissioner in any case retains the right to, if necessary, intervene, implement supervision, and/or undertake other measures envisaged by the regulations of the Republic of Serbia."
