COMMISSIONER
FOR INFORMATION OF PUBLIC IMPORTANCE AND PERSONAL DATA PROTECTION

03.12.2008.

The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection met today in Belgrade with the Ambassador Dimitrios Kypreos, the Head of the OSCE Mission and discussed with him the further cooperation of this international organization ant the institution of the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection.

In relation to this the Commissioner Rodoljub Sabic has also said:

“The ambassador Kypreos was, first of all, interested in the information connected to the appointment of the Commissioner and the possibility of the institution of the Commissioner being blocked due to failure to appoint the Commissioner in due time. I have informed him that, according to the information available to the public, the appointment procedure has started and according to that it should be concluded in time.

We have also discussed the results of the cooperation so far and the modalities of the future cooperation between the OSCE and the institution of the Commissioner for Information. I am very pleased that the ambassador Kypreos has highly evaluated the manner of functioning and the results of the Institution I am in charge of but even more so because he has confirmed the OSCE readiness to continue to offer its maximum support to the institution of the Commissioner.

At the very beginning of the function of the Commissioner institution, at the time when it did not have the basic conditions for functioning, the OSCE Mission offered its vital support which was crucial to establishing this institution. The support and aid continued later, and it is very important that we can count on the support in the future.

I think that the support and aid from the international circles is very important in the context of the tasks which, not only the Commissioner, but the whole state has in relation to the implementation of the modern democratic standards in the field of personal data protection. As a country we are quite late in addressing the number of burning questions in this field and it is important, both from the aspect of the European integrations and more importantly from the aspect of improving human rights, to start changing that condition immediately. Any well-intentioned, quality aid in relation to this is very welcome.”
