The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance, the Ombudsman, the Journalists' Association of Serbia and the Independent Journalists' Association of Serbia objected strongly to publishing of data which enable identification of underage victims of crime and causes additional suffering for them and their families.
These days several texts have been published about rape of a young underage girl with photos of her family house, the city and the street where she lives and initials of personal names. This is a tantamount to a disclosure of her identity and made this already difficult situation even more difficult for a long period of time. Such writing is not journalism and it has nothing to do with provision of information to the public. It only causes additional pain to a victim and his/her family and damages the reputation of journalism as a profession. Editors and journalists of papers which increase sales by such texts should have strength and integrity to prevent such unacceptable practice in the future and regulatory bodies in the field of information should proactively exercise their public powers.
The Commissioner, the Ombudsman and both national journalists' associations also urge members of families and other citizens to avoid revealing personal data and family situations to the general public regardless of the shock they undergo because of criminal offences.
