In his letter sent to Prime Minister Aleksandar Vucic, Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Sabic warned about the poor situation in the field of personal data protection and the need to prevent unfavourable consequences of such situation on human rights, the EU integration process, Serbia's international relations, work of public authorities and economic development.
The Commissioner noted as particularly worrying the fact that the Government made a self-proclaimed commitment in its official documents to improve personal data protection within clearly defined time limits and then fails to do so, while also quoting instances in which delays, beyond all reason, lasted several years. The Commissioner announced that he would submit to the Government, i.e. the competent ministry, the drafted new Model Law on Personal Data Protection as soon as possible, but he went on to explain that this Law and other necessary regulations were only a part of the bigger picture. It is also necessary to do a lot of work on strengthening of control mechanisms, particularly in the field of education of primarily civil servants and also of as wide a section of the general public as possible. Since all this seems to indicate that a strategic approach to personal data protection is necessary in Serbia, the Commissioner urged the Prime Minister to use his authority to influence public authorities to prepare the Action Plan implementing the Personal Data Protection Strategy, to ensure the Government adopts such Plan and to see to its implementation at long last.
