The Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection welcomes the resolution of the Conference of Cofounders of the "Serbian National Internet Domain Registry" Foundation (RNIDS), which amended the General Terms and Conditions for the Registration of National Internet Domain Names, allowing for registration of the domain names .RS and .СРБ without mandatory indication of the registrant's unique personal identification number starting from 19 October 2015.
In that regard, Commissioner Rodoljub Sabic said:
"The adoption of modern personal data protection standards is a huge and ambitious task. It would be neither realistic nor rational to expect this can be achieved solely through the actions and interventions of the Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection. If this goal is to be attained, the (many) entities involved in personal data protection will have to act responsibly.
With this in mind, we are pleased to announce that the resolution made by RNIDS has been made without any orders issued or inspections conducted by the Commissioner pursuant to reports filed by citizens. Identification of irregularities in data processing by the data controller and their rectification without the Commissioner's intervention is an encouraging development.
As the RNIDS resolution still leaves a possibility for users to provide their unique personal identification number with the registration information if they wish to do so in order to avoid possible misunderstandings in the event of transfer of domain registration to a different person, I expect RNDIS to put in place all necessary safeguards in this regard, as well as in respect of any other personal data it collects from domain users. Potential disclosure of unique personal identification numbers online would certainly be excessive and would thus constitute inadmissible personal data processing."
