Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection Rodoljub Sabic and Ombudsman Sasa Jankovic emphasized again the duty to protect addresses, unique personal identification numbers and other personal data even when public authorities and government bodies, the media and other organizations and individuals deal with events and persons of direct interest for the public.
"There is no objective, including transparency and the fight against corruption and other forms of crime, which requires violation of the human rights every one of us is entitled to and each of these objectives can be successfully and efficiently achieved with full respect of human rights", the Commissioner and the Ombudsman jointly emphasized.
The Commissioner and the Ombudsman talked to a representative of the Anti-Corruption Council of the Serbian Government about that even in situations when it is justified to publish names and surnames of persons, it is not justified to publish their home addresses and other data protected by the law, without which the purpose of reporting can be achieved anyway. The representative agreed to delete home addresses from the Council's report for the public.
In addition, the Commissioner and the Ombudsman urged the media not to publish personal data which should be protected even when public authorities and governmental bodies publish them by mistake, for the sake of professionalism, ethics and protection of basic privacy and security.
