Commissioner for Information of Public Importance and Personal Data Protection, Rodoljub Sabic, evaluated yesterday that lateness in application of the Law on Data Protection might have harmful consequences on achieving priority foreign policy goals of Serbia.
Evaluating that the „lateness in securing preconditions for law application" is worrying, Sabic warned that this might have negative consequences amongst else in determining Serbian candidate status for EU membership and visa regime liberalization. Protection and implementation of the rights guaranteed by the Constitution and Law are especially endangered, he quoted and reminded that the Law on Personal Data Protection has been passed three months ago and that his service has prepared adequate enactments for which the Government gave its consent. Pointing out that his Service is still working in an inadequate space and with ten times less number of collaborators than the envisaged one, Sabic estimated that „due to rigid, bureaucratic approach to planning of budgetary funds there would be also problems regarding securing funds for engaging at least a little bit bigger number of collaborators".
- The current attitudes of the Ministry of Finance are completely ignoring the real needs and staff estimates of the Commissioner to which the Assembly has granted its consent - quoted Sabic.
The Commissioner reminded that European Union Monitors shall in short time have their visit here, and he also expressed his doubt that due to conditions in which he works evaluation of the Serbian progress in the data protection field shall be improved.
